Our next artist playing the jack of all trades role is Marc Asylum. Marc is from a smaller town in Alabama called Anniston, however, his determination and mentality don’t fit the typical “small town” narrative. He grew up in an already musically talented family, so picking up music to him was second nature plus being only a two-hour drive from Atlanta, The modern-day hip hop capital, didn’t hurt as well. Being from Anniston, a city where the Freedom Riders bus was burned, and where the KKK openly ran the police force at one point, Marc found the courage to use his music to speak about pressing issues in society. Marc Asylum will be known for many things, and complacency is not one of them. Aside from being an exceptional artist, he also serves in the US Army and runs his clothing brand, Billionaire Mindset. I asked him what it’s like to take on different career paths simultaneously, and he said its “become routine” at this point and it reinforces his drive to become a CEO one day. It seems like a hectic life, but he is just trying to “play the part of what [he wants] to become”

Marc appreciates hip hop because of its unapologetic nature. Freedom of expression is what excites him, no matter how vulgar, truthful or outlandish. At the end of the day, that’s what hip hop music is at the root, expression without any remorse. Another attractive characteristic of hip hop to Marc is its ever-changing sound, the fact that you “never know the extent of your creativity,” this speaks to his drive and his ear for beat selection on his songs. Some of my favorite tracks from Marc are “Diamond”, “Ride To” which is his take on Janet Jackson’s classic, “Poetic Justice” and “The Truth” where he tackles the reality of being black in America.

I asked Marc if he is striving for a specific moment where he has realized “I made it,” he said it came courtesy of his 2017 project Scandals of Life Vol 1, which you can find on Spotify and Apple Music. Next up for the down south MC is to release his project, Scandals of Life Vol 2 in May. For other up and coming rappers his advice is to just stay true to yourself. Marc Asylum is setting himself up to be a powerhouse in the industry with his out of this world work ethic. Go check out his music on all platforms. He is sure to a lasting impact on the culture.
