Gnarly Marley is a superstar in the making, hailing from Ellenwood, Ga. He is surely the next big thing to blow up from the Atlanta music scene. Marley’s laid back yet silky flow is reminiscent of a seasoned New York rapper. Growing up Marley was exposed to the typical r&b music from his parents like most of us, but his exposure took a more classical turn from his grandmother who would listen to the likes of Beethoven and Johann Bach. It’s not your typical background for a rapper, but it proved to work in his scenario. As Marley began falling in love with music and further exploring different genres, he bought his first album, Usher’s 2001 album, 8701, which was a classic in itself. This would lead him to further expanding his musical pallet, and taking him one step closer to finding his true love.

As music consumers, artists, producers, we all have that one artist or album that changed our whole outlook on hip hop as a whole and made us fall in love with the genre. For Marley, that was Joey Bada$$, he said “he changed [his] life and even saved hip hop.” It’s quite evident on his song “Dead Homies” (great song, you can find it on his instagram), the influence that Joey Bada$$ had on his musical sound from the beat, to his flow. Other big musical influences include Outkast, Erykah Badu, Tupac, and J Cole, but he stands by his philosophy that he can derive inspiration from anybody, and not just specific artist. He can most likely thank his family for this admirable open-mindedness.

With a name like Gnarly Marley that is sure to stick with you, he sets himself apart musically by using an off kilter cadence but still manages to float on the production and keep your attention. He prides himself on behind surrounded by “the most dope artists in Atlanta,” promoting good vibes and high vibrations. The self-titled “hidden gem” is all about spreading his movement far beyond Ellenwood, and he is sure on his way. Marley is on his way to leaving his mark on the Atlanta music scene and beyond. Hopefully in the near future you can catch Marley collaborating with his dream collab, J Cole or rocking sold out stadiums. As for now, his new project “Gnarly Noises” drops March, 28th, and his listening party will be TBD. Gnarly Marley is up next, keep your eyes on him. Join the wave or drown.
