My Top February Releases
February although shorter than the rest of the months in the year, still managed to be an impactful and impressive month of music. Here are some of my favorites:
Shimmy
Amine made his long awaited return to the lime light with his song “Shimmy”, after dropping “ONEPOINTFIVE” in August of 2018. “Shimmy” samples Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” from 1995, the sample is flawlessly executed with a perfect balance between what was ODB’s song and what is now Amine’s masterpiece. The song is nothing short of braggadocious, filled with quotable lyrics that simultaneously remind other rappers of how they can’t fuck with Amine.
When To Say When & Chicago Freestyle
A little over a month after his collab with Future dropped, Drake surprised everybody with new music titled “When to say When & Chicago Freestyle”. The first half of the track samples a classic Jay-Z track, “Song Cry”, from “The Blueprint”, the second half Drake takes on a more introspective tone while taking a page out of Eminem’s book from his 2002 track, “Superman”. This track is definitely worth a listen while we wait for his album that he said is coming in 2020.
UNLOCKED
Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats unite again on their collab album, UNLOCKED. Denzel Curry managed to freestyle the ENTIRE album, and Kenyy Beats production was nothing short of amazing. When the two of them link up, it’s nothing short of amazing. My favorite track is Take_it_Back_v2.
My Turn
Lil Baby returned to the music scene with his first full length album since “Street Gossip” and it was nothing short of amazing. The album is 20 songs, right at one hour long. Everybody that was featured on the album brought their A-Game, some of my favorites were Moneybagg Yo, Gunna, and Lil Uzi Vert verses. I can’t say enough good about this album, if he wasn’t mainstream before outside of Atlanta, this album will be sure to cement his place as one of the best out of Atlanta.
